Real Ale

The Halfway House usually offers four cask, or real ales from its four beer engines.

Being in Scotland’s capital city, we like to serve Scottish cask beer and so specialise in beers from Scotland’s growing number of micro-breweries. As a rule, you will find beer on offer from three or four different brewers but, during late July, throughout August and early September, one brewer is featured each week during the “Scottish Cask Ale Showcase” and details of which brewer is to be featured each week appear in the CAMRA newspaper, “What’s Brewing” as well as on this website.

During the annual “Six Nations Championship” rugby competition, The Halfway House tries to feature as many CAMRA champion beers as possible over the six weeks from mid-February to the end of March. At the end of October, for two weeks, there is another special feature - in 2004, the feature was called “Oh, Mister Porter”, and in 2005, the feature was “A Taste of the Tyne”. For 2006, it was “Wear only Teesing” which featured beers from County Durham brewed from the River Wear to the River Tees.  In 2007, it’s going to be different again so you’ll have to watch this space!
